Every year myself and my girlfriends head out for FUN at Sheckys Girls Night Out. This event is our guaranteed annual fun. Free cocktails, beauty, makeovers, shopping, fashion, jewelry and GIRLFRIENDS!! How could you go wrong? Now, compared with last years Girls Night Out this Shecky's event was smaller, however, I met awesome local vendors. I am a huge fan of local business. (I am a true San Franciscan.) This year it was really cool to see so many local vendors out. Amongst the many vendor I met... I must tell you about these two ladies in the picture below.

I met 2 beautiful, local Bay Area ladies, Mary of Gratitude Gourmet and Rita of Rita Chung Designs (Rita's Designs can be found at a store called California Luxury). Mary (on the right) has a business called Gratitude Gourmet! Mary creates VEGAN treats! Yummy Truffles, chocolate, and Vin Pate de Fruit (Wine ). Everyone knows my business partner, Marna Armstead and myself are bakers/owners of SassyCakes by Sassy Girl Tees and our desserts are made with real sugar and butter BUT we always wonder about vegan style sweet treats. I also fell in love with her clutches! They are HOT! I am a huge fan! I love Rita and Rita's Designs. While talking to Rita she mentioned that everything is made in California (WOOT WOOT!!). Hello World, Pumpkins are everywhere!! Time to chat about Beauty! Health and the PUMPKIN! The word pumpkin originated from the Greek word Pepõn which means large melon. Although pumpkins are known to be a part of the squash family it is technically a fruit. The good ol' jack o lantern may have some real benefits afterall. Pumpkin's just aren't good for making pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread. Pumpkins are actually a good source of vitamin A and carotenes. Vitamin A is great anti-oxidant. Vitamin A is needed for maintaining healthy eyes, bones and skin. Research says, foods rich in Vitamin A helps body protect against lung and oral cancers. Gotta love that! Vitamin A is normally found in foods that are rich in color.

Everyone knows ORANGE is my favorite color and the bright orange color of the pumpkin is PROOF that it's full of beta-carotene and we need beta-carotene in our lives. Research shows that people who eat a diet rich in beta-carotene are less likely to develop certain cancers... like lung cancer, breast cancer and even skin cancer. Gotta love that also!! I realize pumpkins really do deserve more credit than what I gave them.

Now that we've gone over the HEALTH part TIS TIME FOR BEAUTY! Check out these natural beauty recipes involving a fruit called the PUMPKIN.

Au Natural Pumpkin Mask Time! I checked out this recipe by Erica Katz, beauty guru and author of Bonding Over Beauty. 'Who knew pumpkins can keep your face smooth and wrinkle-free.' Try the pumpkin mask recipe (check out the recipe and make sure you're not allergic to any of this)

2 tsp canned pureed pumpkin
1/2 tsp honey
1/4 tsp heavy whipping cream
Mix all ingredients and apply to face.
Leave on for 10 min and rinse!

THE RECIPE

1/2 cup of pumpkin – you can either use puree from the innards of your soon-to-be tossed Jack-o-Lantern, a can of pumpkin puree, or baby food.
1/4 cup of yogurt
2 tbsp of honey

THE HOW TO

Put all ingredients in to bowl and mix well
Separate hair in sections and smooth from root to tip throughout entire head
Once entire head has been pumpkin-ified, put on a showercap and leave on hair for about 20-30 minutes
Rinse
Continue with your normal hair regimen

Hello World! Summer is here! and I am so excited! Summer time is my favorite season. I love the sunshine, beautiful weather and yummy summer time fruits like the tiny but mighty CHERRY! Of course cherries can be a pain to eat due to the seed BUT would you believe cherries can actually help your body out. You're probably wondering how? Not that lil red thing with the seed in the middle... YES the cherry is tiny but mighty

Everyone needs proper rest in order to function properly. Unfortunately everyone is not able to rest... WELL would you believe the tiny but mighty cherry is actually one of the only fruits that have natural sources of a substance named melatonin.

What is melatonin? (Per WebMD) Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland , a small gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control your sleep and wake cycles
And we all know how important proper rest.

Cherries are also well known for specific anti-oxidants! What are anti-oxidants? Ant ioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) as well as enzymes (proteins in your body that assist in chemical reactions). They are believed to play a role in preventing the development of such chronic diseases as cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, and cataracts.

I think everyone can agree WE ALL LOVE ANTIOXIDANT filled foods and according to livestrong.com, cherries are loaded with a specific antioxidant, called anthocyanins, which gives cherries their bright red color. Cherries have the highest levels of the antioxidants anthocyanins 1 and 2 (compared to any other fruit) which have been shown to relieve the pain associated with inflammation.

Many of us prefer the sweet taste of cherries BUT the tart cherries are actually the cherries with the highest levels of antioxidants so don't pass up the dried tart cherries for the sweet ones. The tart cherries are very good especially if you're suffering from Gout. If you don't like to eat dried tart cherries try drinking tart cherry juice. Your body will thank you.

As I said the tiny but mighty cherry is more than a pretty red fruit but it actually has health benefits that everyone can use. Crunch Crunch Crunch... I love Carrots

Hello World! Spring is here! and Summer is approaching! (although this SF Cali weather is confused) All those who know me well... KNOW I LOVE THE COLOR ORANGE! I am drawn to ORANGE! No matter what store it is, if I see ORANGE! I've got to have it!
While cruising the veggie aisle I find these ORANGE stick like objects calling my name, QianaQiana... I find myself purchasing bags of carrots!! MMmmmm the smile that graces my face is ridiculuos (really it is). It's spring time and carrots are becoming my friend.
Not quite sure why suddenly I'm feeling a need for carrots almost everyday BUT I am enjoying my munchy crunchy sweet carrots. My mother always said carrots are good for your vision well apparently they are good for more than that.

Hello World, I've been hiatus... BUT I've been around. Some of you may or may not know, October 2009 I decided to no longer relax (PERM) my hair. I had so many reasons to stop doing this type of treatment to my hair. After deciding to no longer relax my hair I was forced to deal with my OWN HAIR (yes MY HAIR) and it was the beginning of my hair journey (I wondered why they called it a 'journey'... NOW I know). In the meantime I've stayed true!! And I have not purchased any relaxer and I'm dealing with my natural 'coils of joy' and it's been difficult at times. Not sure how to style it. Not sure what to do it... It's so much hair BUT at the same time I'm glad I did it for so many reasons. In the midst of my journey I have had bad days... (SMH) feeling lost with this hair LOL! I'm a member on alot of Natural Hair Blogs. I thank God for the blogs and youtube! - They are my support group. I was on a blog called Natural Sunshine and I noticed the 'natural hair' groups would have these meetups. They had pics, product swapping and just good ol' fun OR so it seemed. I thought to myself, where are all the naturals in my CITY !!?? I need help. I need a Natural Hair Meetup!! Meet me please!! I need help!!
I'm ready to shave my head bald LOL! I met up with my first Natural Hair Meetup in Berkeley! (Clapping my hands) I had so much fun! It was absolutely great! We swapped products and I HAD A HAIR FAB TIME! Not only did I get free products I had a chance to listen to what others like me are experiencing... I learned a lot. I felt so much better. This is GOOOOOOD!! It's about time people realized women are sometimes curvy... Myself for example, my waist is not as large as my hips and butt soooooo a belt is a must have! If I don't have a belt I have a huge gap in the back of pants... and we all know... that's a fashion no-no (SMH)

I continued to read and came across this, "Their (Curve ID) tag line?

Glue eggs to the carton and beg for eggs in the morning. When the victim gets them the eggs break!

If you have a sink with a sprayer, put a rubber band around the handle when nobody’s looking. This automatically keeps the nozzle in spray-mode. Make sure the nozzle is pointing up and outward. The next person to use the sink will get a splash!

Take an empty coffee mix can and replace it with a can with coffee mix in it. Make sure coffee cans are the same brand, or it will not work. At the bottom of the can put a piece of paper that says April Fools. Make sure you help the person with making their coffee to see their reaction.

I LOVE MZ BADU! This is Erykah Badu! This is classic! I applaud her for stripping down to nothing and walking like a queen! BUT it’s the words that I listen to. I'm thankful for another day to shake and move and keep it Sassy!!
Well I've been super sassy-li-cious busy these days. Marna and I had a photo shoot for our t-shirt company called Sassy Girl Tees some weeks ago and MAN OH MAN!! We've been like lil sassy-honey bees ever since.

Hello World... I'm back
I've been super busy!! working on a Sassy Girl Tees photo shoot!! This has been quite the experience. We (Me and Marna) were so busy trying to pull this thing together. It was our first of many photo shoots. I'm excited and I can't wait to see how it all turns out. SO many things to do... such little time. We need an intern LOL!! I'm running around like a naked chicken. When I run around like a lil featherless chicken I surround myself with tons of music.
MUSIC is my calm in the midst of the storm.

I've joined a gym and had a training session that kicked my butt BUT I know if I stick to what the instructor said I'll be ready for the summer. YEP I'll be all Sassy-Li-Cious!

I've been slacking on the water thing (thumbs down for myself) I fell off the wagon aaaaagain.
Why is it so hard to do the right thing? Why can't I just drink water all day?? every day???
Pray for me please LOL because I am struggling in this area. I'm still a faithful lil walker every Saturday getting my 2 miles in weekly. Thank you again to all the walkers in my group (I love you guys)

So were done with February 2010!! Black History Month, Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year (Year of the Tiger... NOT TIGER WOODS!! I don't wanna hear his name for at least another 8 months LOL)

February always seems to go so fast. Once again I want to thank all of the people who paved the way for me as a young black woman. I cannot express enough how much I appreciate your heart and soul. I hope to make all of those before me PROUD.

Hello World, as usual I was doing my late night reading online and I ran across this article. THe title read, Breform Means You Never Have To Wear A Bra Again?
AND then I see this thing AND I'm baffled. I had so many thoughts going thru my mind. My first thought was how is this gonna stop women from wearing bras? what size does it come in? where are the straps? does it have tape? does it stick to you?
Then I read... " Now there’s the internal bra"

A internal bra?? WHAT THA... so of course I continued to read and it said, it "goes one step further by putting a reinforcing structure in place, so that you don’t actually have to wear a bra."

The wording REINFORCING STRUCTURE sounded so harsh! SO then I read on, "The product used is called Breform—a firm mesh cup that’s implanted under a layer of breast skin, effectively providing a support to lift and hold them."

HOLY MOLY!! Did they say a FIRM MESH CUP IMPLANTED UNDER A LAYER OF SKIN!!!
I was baffled, I suddenly started to think what are we as a human race doing to ourselves! Is it really this serious?? MESH CUPS IMPLANTED in our chest. I thought about the images we we're sending our daughters and young ladies. I felt sad. What ever happened to loving yourself. Whatever happened to knowing that you are beautifully and wonderfully made. NOW don't get me wrong I'd like to get somethings tucked due to childbirth BUT does it really matter in the long run?

I continued reading and the article went on to say, "While this kind of sounds like a miracle procedure, some of the details are not so pleasant."

Miracle and Not So Pleasant don't go together!!

A plastic surgeon who performs the technique explains, “Over time, the mesh gets incorporated into the breast as the body produces a fibrous tissue that holds the structure in place—like a permanent bra under the skin.”

I went on to read that, "The procedure is relatively new, but so far, none of the 600 women to participate have had any complications."

Marna and I attended Kiss the Curves, the first ever Plus-Size Fashion Gala in the Bay Area, The show was located in Oakland at the Historic Sweets Ballroom. Tracie Collins Executive Producer, Plus Model, Actress, Writer!! (she does it all) I had a chance to meet Tracie and she was so COOL!!

HEY EVERYONE!! so I know I haven't blogged in a while. I've been pretty busy these days.
It's February 2010!

Let me first say... Happy Black History Month!! I can't let this month go by and not think of my past! I actually get pretty emotional about it because I know I could not do anything that I'm doing now without someone breaking some sort of barrier for me.

Many people have endored sooooo much pain and torment just so that I and many other people like myself could read, vote, drink out of a fountain, swim in a pool, sit in the front of the bus... so many things!! I'm so thankful for them. Now don't get me wrong... I'm thankful for my ancestors everyday BUT I'm thankful for this month of extra celebration LOL!

I'm still doing my walking every saturday with our walking group and we are the best! Although it's been rainy out here in the Bay Area were still walking YEP! were in the malls walking the whole mall!! and let me tell you to walk a mall for an hour!! is work!! I love my walking group! they keep me motivated and they keep my smiling!! Thank you ladies!

Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King!

January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. was born.

He grew to become one of the greatest Social Activists the world has ever known. at 35, he became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace prize.

He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 while making a speech from the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee.

His Birthday became a National Holiday by an act of Congress in 1983.

Dr. King I thank you for being such a great example for the world.
When I think of Dr. King I think of Love, Peace, Unity, Freedom... and OBAMA!! I'm so grateful for the life he lived and the path he created.

First I want to summarize all of the Kwanzaa Principles

The Kwanzaa Principles are good to recognize and demonstrate all through the year

The foundation of Kwanzaa are the Seven Principles, or Nguzo Saba. When Dr. Karenga created the celebration of Kwanzaa he wanted to reflect the best qualities and characteristics of the "first fruit" or harvest festivals that were celebrated throughout Africa. It was these qualities that established the Nguzo Saba, or Seven Principles of Kwanzaa. (Nguzo Saba is Kiswahili for Seven Principles).

The Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba) of Kwanzaa are:

Umoja (Unity)
Kujichagulia (Self-determination)
Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
Nia (Purpose)
Kuumba (Creativity)
Imani (Faith)

Umoja (ooh-MOE-jah) means Unity, and it is the principle for the first day

Like I said earlier... IT'S 2010!!

New start, new focuses, new visions and a new year!!
I'm very excited about this year. Hoping and praying for a beautiful year.

I started my year off by doing things I said I wanted and needed to do...
I'm still sticking to the Healthy Hair Challenge - drinking 64 oz. of water per day for 6 weeks. (Thanks to this beautiful site... it really inspired me to really push to drink more water - )I'm hoping to continue the water drinking for the rest of my life.

Water is soooo important and it's one of those things I need to do on a constant basis.

Health this year is a big deal to me and I want to be as healthy as I can.
I need strength and health in order to accomplish goals I have set for myself.

I started off with my walking group today!
The walk was great this morning although I know... I'm going to be so sore in the morning BUT I will endure. I had my water with me (smiling) and after the walk this morning I drank 64 oz in about an hour. I didn't stop there... I actually kept drinking for the remainder of my day and I feel good about it.

Physical Fitness is also important to me this year and ENDURANCE!!

Endurance - noun

1. the fact or power of enduring or bearing pain, hardships, etc.
2. the ability or strength to continue or last, esp. despite fatigue, stress, or other adverse conditions; stamina: He has amazing physical endurance.
3. lasting quality; duration: His friendships have little endurance.

Endurance can be applied to so many areas in my life
(no need to list them all here!! LOL!! BUT you can imagine)

On the walk of life... you will sometimes see and stumble into curves, pot holes, grass valleys with lil flowers and sometimes you'll find a cactus plant here or there LOL! THATS WHERE ENDURANCE comes into play.

Day #3 Kwanzaa Principle

Day #2 of the 64 oz. of water challenge

Today was interesting, I drank my 32 oz. this morning. I decided to eat lunch around 11:30 am. I walked to Subway in the freezing cold (I hate the cold). I ordered a Meatball Sandwich. I finally got back to my desk and as I bit into the sandwich my body literally was rejecting the meat... I couldn't believe it, every bite of meat I spit out because it did not taste right.

This is one of my favorite sandwiches BUT the taste was not agreeing with me so I took the meat off of the sandwich at just ate the veggies and bread.
I joked with my cousin Marna about this and we laughed BUT this was very strange for me.

Tonight, for dinner we had chicken rice and gravy and sweet potatoes and mixed veggies... I could barely eat the meat. I was starting to have that sick feeling I had earlier today. This made me wonder will my appetite change due to the water drinking.

I ate the veggies and sweet potatoes with no problem BUT the meat was suddenly making me feel sick.

Sometimes it's important to listen to your body and do what it says
(just make sure youre body is saying good things of course)

I can officially say since drinking water... grease... is not what my body wants and it's not what I need.

This is going to be an interesting adventure. Stay tuned for part 3 of my 6 weeks of drinking 64 oz. of water.

I thought it was great when she realized her role in young womens lives and she got rid of the weave!! I was so shocked and happy!! She's a beautiful woman anyway and without the extra hair she was more beautiful.

It's Day #2 for Kwanzaa and our principal for day is...
Kujichagulia(koo-jee-cha-goo-LEE-ah), Swahili for "self-determination," is the principle celebrated on the second day.
To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.

Practice Kujichagulia every day!

Today is my first day of drinking 64oz of water a day for 6 weeks!!
I recently joined a site called www.naturalsunshine.ning.com/
(great site) and one of the challenges is a healthy hair challenge

I will be drinking 64 oz. of water for my body for the next 6 weeks and I will see what improvements it makes to my hair, skin and whole body!

Yes 6 weeks... I'm actually excited about this because one of my goals for 2010 is to drink more water!

Water has so many bonuses to a healthy life!

Sure you say it's just water what's the big deal BUT when you are Pepsi addict like I am... It can be a huge challenge

BUT with SELF DETERMINATION on my side I know I can tackle this with no problem

Today is December 26th, 2009

The day after Christmas! I had a beautiful Christmas with friends and family and FOOD! (good food) I am so thankful to the Lord that he has blessed me to have such loving friends and family. I enjoyed being around LOVED ones!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE... its such a beautiful thing to experience and I am blessed and thankful that I can experience LOVEEEEE!

Today is also the first of Kwanzaa (December 26th)
